Xenophobia comes from ignorance and fear.
I understood the anger towards Islam after 9/11. How could I not--they were my cities--the one I grew up in and the one I have lived in for many years that were struck and damaged!
And at the same time, I had Muslim friends and coworkers. SC's daycare provider had been Muslim and so was JR's.
I could hate the people who had hurt my cities. But I could not feel blanket hate towards Islam as a religion, and I still can't.
I feel immense anger at how Islam has been twisted by people to make it fit their personal world view. But then, the same thing has been done in the name of EVERY major religion.
Somehow, someway, we've got to understand each other and see that our similarities far exceed our differences.
Which is why I love this recent arrival to my library:

It's a wonderful photo essay showing people of the major faiths and their families. And it ends with these lines:
"All their great teachers have taught the same lesson:
Love and care for one another and for our beautiful earth"
