One of the ladies who works with me is Jewish on her father's side, but he was an atheist and they weren't observant.
The other is Catholic, but married someone who is Jewish, and they are raising their daughter Jewish.
Both of them are off today because they are getting ready for Passover.
I am 100 percent Jewish (though my mother is an atheist and my father stopped being observant when he left home) and we did celebrate Passover to some extent when I was a kid.
So guess who's working today? And guess who isn't doing anything for Passover?
Moi, of course. I am here, not getting ready for anything.
Neither of my colleagues is doing a full, complete Passover, and my hat is off to Jewish women who do observe Pesach in the fullest sense. Keeping a kosher kitchen, with its requirements that dairy and meat products be TOTALLY separate, right down to the pots, dishes and silverware, is tough enough. Passover requires changing all the dishes (2 sets) for special sets for Passover. And that's just the beginning.
Of course, if you're like the incredibly rich Jewish American Princess I once saw on a cooking show, and have 2 COMPLETE kitchens in one room, it must be a lot easier. But I'll bet she's got a maid to do all that work anyway.......
If you'd like a very thorough explanation of Passover, Judaisim 101 has a great page on the holiday.
My contribution to your Passover knowledge will be a recipe for Sephardic style maccaroons, coming tomorrow..............
