The Cast Of Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 13 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 13. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story(!)

JR: Age 9  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

We're Making Progress, But We're Not Having Fun Yet--Maybe Not Ever

posted Sat, 02/25/06

The Man got the third bookcase out of JR's room tonight, and he is NOT having a good time doing so.

He is also not happy because I had a contractor come in today and give us an estimate on:

1)Pulling the hideous paper off of JR's walls, fixing the plaster as needed and painting the room

2)Painting SC's room, mostly because she is going to be really ticked if her sister's room gets all fixed up and painted a COLOR  and her's stays plain white.

3)Pulling the hideous PEELING wallpaper off of the walls in the hall upstairs, down the staircase, and all around the living room and painting, plus some plastering near the kitchen that's needed doing since we renovated the kitchen 4 years ago.

The total cost amounts to a 4 figure amount that is <gulp> considerably higher than we expected. On the bright side, we have a tax refund due us and some long held savings bonds that should cover the cost.

A month from now, the work will be done, JR will have a room that LOOKS like a room, and the rest of the house will look a whole lot better. And as the contractor points out, we probably won't be doing a job like this again for another 10 or 20 years.

But the Man is going to be a pain to live with. More than usual that is. Partly, I think, because he really likes doing these projects ourselves and hates spending all the money to have someone else do it.

I'm not crazy about it either. But the point is, it is going to get DONE. Finished. Completed. All those nice words.

And around here, that's worth every penny it will cost.

Stay tuned. This is bound to give me a LOT to blog about!
