Perhaps as an agnotic Jew I have no right to be talking about religion here. But I do feel I have as much right as any other human being to talk about morality. So....
Tomorrow is Easter. And if you are a Christian and going to church, don't just pray for Terri Schiavo.
Pray for her husband. And if you think he's a larcenous, evil man, doesn't he need the prayers far far more than Terri does? Isn't the occasion you are observing tomorrow celebrate the man who asked God to forgive those who had sentenced him to death?
Pray for her parents. They need our sympathy. Whatever your feelings about their actions, they had a daughter they loved and they will never get her back as that person.
Pray for those poor little kids with their parents outside the nursing home who are being used as media pawns. They don't know what's going on. Their parents do--and they need prayers that they will see what they are doing to their children!
Pray for all the people in hospitals who are NOT in the media spotlight, and may not be getting the medical care they need. And pray for their families, many of whom are being forced to make agonizing decisions about life and death for the people they love.
Pray for the judges who have been forced into making these decisions. You may think of them as evil human beings, but my guess is a lot of them are troubled by the rulings they have had to make under the law. They've made them not because they want to hurt the Schindlers, but because that's their job--to carry out the law. They have no choice, but to see the bigger picture, and their emotions have nothing to do with what they have done.
Pray for us all, that we can live good, loving lives and instead of tearing at each other's souls, do everything we can to support each other and accept that there are no easy answers.
Pray for Terri. But if there's a Heaven, she's as likely to go there as anyone ever on this planet. Perhaps more so.
And from what I've read about Terri Schiavo, I think she would have wanted people to think about suffering going on all over this planet, not just in that hospice in Florida. Please think of that tomorrow......................
