The Main Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 15 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 14. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story--she's a teenager(!)

JR: Age 10  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

    Want The Latest Mishegosse?

    JR is 6

    posted Mon, 05/23/05

The cap and the shirt combo sum her up. She is a weird mix of sweet little girl, and changeling from another planet.

She was also a very easy baby--but she has made up for it since then!

This is not going to be quite the b-day I'd planned for her. I was going to pick her up early from school (just her) and bring her to the library. She gets to bring  "Barney" --her kindergarten class's  stuffed brown bear--home today. We arranged for her turn to be today so he could come home from her birthday, and I thought coming to the library might be a nice thing to share with the class. She'd also get a bit of time by herself with me, something that never happens often enough to suit either of us.

But it always seems that no matter what I plan, something always happens.  This time it's the Man--he's got some sort of flu, or perhaps it's related to the malaria he had when he was in Africa many many years ago. Either way, he had a fever of 102.4 last night, and today his back is acting up and he still has a fever.

So I am going to get both girls at the same time. We can still do the library and we will bake her cake when we get home. And since JR didn't know it was supposed to be just her, she'll be fine with the whole thing.

She brought cupcakes to school this morning. There will be presents and a cake tonight. And she's just thrilled it's her birthday. And I haven't the heart to tell her, it's like what Snoopy said about walking in your bare feet:

"After a while, the thrill wears off"

    Oh, BOY does it!!!!!!!!
