Dear Room Mother In My Daughter's Kindergarten Class,
How nice of you to decide that for "Teacher Recognition Week" all the kids should bring in a flower so we can give the teacher a lovely bouqet. It's just charming!
Only one problem..........
Did it occur to you that asking on Monday for a flower on Tuesday might be a bit short notice?
I assume that you are one of the SAHMs, but that probably means your afternoon is packed with things like soccer, Girl Scouts and ballet lessons. It might be a bit difficult for you to do all those things AND get to the store to buy your flower, though it's probably doable.
But there are other moms among your child's classmates. Some of them don't speak English well. Some of them are working moms like myself, who don't even get home until dinner time, and need to feed the kids, help them get their homework done and get them to bed, all in the span of 2-3 hours!
Somehow, popping off to the store to buy a flower just wouldn't fit in with my evening regime, which usually culminates in my collapsing onto my bed shortly after the little dears are safely tucked up for the night.
Wouldn't it have made more sense to send a notice out LAST week? And to suggest that bringing a flower would be nice, and that if they wanted to do so, they could on Tuesday, but that the teachers would love a homemade card or something similiar?
I know that safe in your SUV, you never stopped to think that maybe, just MAYBE there are families where there is no father, where mom is working 2 jobs to make ends meet and buying a flower might not be possible. But there are kids like that in our school.
Aside to others--I am NOT exaggerating the SUV thing. On the rare occasions when I go and pick up the girls at "Kiss and Ride", I am the only parent NOT driving a mini-van or an SUV. Truly......
So, the teacher got one less flower yesterday. But today JR will be bringing the teacher some of my delicious blueberry muffins and a homemade card, both of which I'm sure she'll enjoy.
Sorry to foul up your plan, but I'm not a supermom. I'm a tired mom!
Sincerely yours,
The Library Lady
