JR is a shiksa.
Well, technically, she isn't. A shiksa (shick-sah) is a non-Jewish girl. And according to Jewish law, if your mother is Jewish, you are too. I'm Jewish, so my daughters are Jewish.
But since the Man and I have not been bringing up our girls with any sort of religion--aside from SC's occasional visits to mass with my mother-in-law when she's staying with them, or lighting the menorah at Chanukah--they really don't GET that they are Jewish.
In JR's case that may be a blessing at Passover because of the dietary considerations. I mean, the child basically lives on crackers, rice and pasta, all of which as chametz (ha-mets)--foods that are forbidden during Passover. I suppose she might eat matzo -- but for a week? I don't think so!
And the sad truth about JR was really brought home during yesterday's trip to Wegman's where she picked out (OY!) a BLUEBERRY bagel!
For those of you who don't get the shame of this, we explained this to a co-worker today as the equivalent of going to Taco Bell for authentic Mexican food. Or confusing Spaghetti O's with REAL Italian food. Get it now?
Anyway, if you'd like to know all about Passover you can click here for all the facts. And there's a recipe for some delicious macaroons I posted here.
And I'm going to take comfort in the fact that SC likes onion bagels. With cream cheese and LOX!
Abei gezunt. Enjoy Passover if you're celebrating it...........
